A man went to church to confess his sins to a priest

[Seen on Quora.com, posted by "Nic" K. Mowe]

The man said, “Father, I've sinned and I wish to confess.”

“Go on, my son. Go on.” says the Father.

‘Okay. About two weeks ago, I was walking in my neighborhood, and my neighbor said her fridge was broken, and she asked if I could come in and fix it. So I went inside and started fixing the fridge - and then it started to rain really heavily. By the time I was done, it was still raining. So she said, 'You can't go out in this rain. Come and have tea with me, and let's talk.' "

"So we had tea, and one thing led to another, and I slept with her."

“But that's not it.” - “Go on, my son, go on.”

“Then last week, I was in another neighborhood, and a woman said that her oven wasn't working, and asked if I could help. I went inside, started fixing it, and again it started to rain, and after I fixed it, it was still pouring, so she said you can't leave in this weather. Come and have some food. So we ate and one thing led to another and I slept with her, too.”

“There's more.” - “Go on, my son - go on, my son.”

“Okay. Just yesterday I was driving in my car and it started breaking down. Luckily i was near a garage, and the mechanic turned out to be an old friend from high school. He fixed the car, but then it started to rain again, and he said, 'Come inside. Let's have some vodka and lemonade and catch up.' We drank, got a bit tipsy. One thing led to another, and I slept with him."

"Father: What should I do?”

Father turned to him and said, “Get out of here before it starts to rain!”

Why won’t single payer healthcare work in the U.S.? What is different in Sweden, Denmark, or Canada?

[Answered on Quora.com by J.J.R.]

I once listened to a talk by the world's leading expert on corruption. The expert was asked, flat out, whether the U.S. government was corrupt. The expert said ...
.
“It is impossible to say if the government of the United States is corrupt. What qualifies as corruption in other countries is the way your government is designed to work.”

The U.S. government is DESIGNED to be corrupt. In most other countries, the way our government works on a daily basis would be illegal.

That's why single payer healthcare works everywhere else but here.

What are some dark jokes that are funny but shouldn't be?

[Answered on Quora.com by Marek Čtrnáct]

I remembered this one recently, since it’s topical.

A certain country was ruled by a dictator who was very paranoid. He rarely appeared in the public; he preferred to send one of his many doubles.

One day, enemy attacks the palace. The survival of the dictator is in question. The doubles await news, trembling in fear. If the dictator dies, they would be no longer useful, and with all the secrets they know, the new regime surely wouldn’t let them live.

Finally, they are called in a conference room. One of the dictator’s chief advisors enters.

“My dear doubles!” he says. “I have good news and bad news. The good news is that our beloved leader has survived the dastardly attack, and so, your services are still very much required.”

The doubles collectively sigh with relief.

Then a big man with an axe enters the room.

“Now for the bad news,” continues the advisor. “He lost an arm ...”

I am referencing this song today, because I feel "broken" by my government's recent actions. Gov't Mule "Beautifully Broken"

March 1 and March 2 reflections & memories

Today I am thinking of my cats Oliver and Owen, who were born on or near this day, 15 years ago. I am also thinking of other dearly-beloved mammals that are, or were, in my life.

When I brought my current old-lady cat Coco home, as a 10-week-old, Owen (half a year older) stopped dead in his tracks, when he first saw her. I didn't know if Owen was going to attack Coco - but instead they immediately started to develop a profound love relationship.

Owen was possibly the most loving cat I ever knew - but every cat I knew well was quite loving! [Owen died in 2012. Oliver died in 2023.]

So, these days, I feel a diffuse pain of "things missing to me, that I once had and loved" - as well as the somewhat diffuse and not-yet-completely-discerned pain of what our peopled world is becoming, and already is (and becomes increasingly revealed).

I judge that I'm having a hard time managing my several levels of cognitive dissonance - and I also guess that others struggle, in similar fashions - and we must all press on, anyway, even as things are or may become (?).

Dissociation is useful, for a while. But I think it only hides any call to action that one might be avoiding.

I'd like to know how you feel about current human affairs, too. And / or: you could tell me about mammals you have loved.

To end with a positive reflection, I'm also thinking of Hulda Faleide, who was born on March 2, 105 years ago. I think she was a wonderful, caring, hardworking, upstanding, helpful member of her family and of every one of her larger communities (!). I'm so pleased that I had the long-term privilege of being acquainted with and cared-for by Hulda. I loved her and respected her, and I thought Hulda made a wonderful role model for very many. Hulda also had an enjoyable, dry sense of humor, which one could regularly look forward to.

Genesis "Squonk"

Genesis "Squonk"

Like father like son
Not flesh, nor fish, nor bone
A red rag hangs from an open mouth
Alive at both ends but a little dead in the middle
A tumbling and a bumbling he will go
All the King's horses and all the King's men
Could never put a smile on that face
He's a shy one, he's a shy one, wouldn't you be too?
Scared to be left all on his own
He hasn't a, hasn't a friend to play with the ugly duckling
The pressure on, the bubble will burst before our eyes
All the while in perfect time his tears are falling on the ground
But if you don't stand up, you don't stand a chance
You don't stand a chance
Go a little faster now, you might get there in time
Mirror, mirror on the wall
His heart was broken long before he ever came to you
Stop your tears from falling
The trail they leave is very clear for all to see at night
All to see at night
They come at night
In season, out of season
What's the difference when you don't know the reason
In one hand bread, the other a stone
The hunter enters the forest
All are not huntsmen who can blow the huntsman's horn by the look of this one
You've not got much to fear
Here I am, I'm very fierce and frightening
I come to match my skill to yours
Now listen here, listen to me, don't you run away now
I am a friend, I'd really like to play with you
Making noises my little furry friend would make
I'll trick him, then I'll kick him into my sack
You better watch out, you better watch out
I've got you, I've got you, you'll never get away
Walking home that night
The sack across my back, the sound of sobbing on my shoulder
When suddenly it stopped
I opened up the sack, all that I had
A pool of bubbles and tears, just a pool of tears
Just a pool of tears
All in all you are a very dying race
Placing trust upon a cruel world
You never had the things you thought you should have had
And you'll not get them now
And all the while in perfect time
Your tears are falling on the ground
